Sleep for the body AND the mind.

A word about Rozerem

Thursday November 2, 2006

Rozerem is a little different than the other sleep medications available. According to Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, the maker, Rozerem has shown no evidence of abuse or addiction over long term use. Ambien, Lunesta, and Sonata while having a large reduction in narcotic like effects still have a sedating effect on the brain.

Though Rozerem is a little different in it's affect on the body, it should still be taken with precaution. There are still potential side effects and specific directions on taking the medication. As always, please consult with your doctor.

Don't stay up too late reading all this.

Nothing to say here that they don't say better at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

While you were sleeping...

Wednesday October 04, 2006

What actually happens while we are sleeping? Most of us know that when we don't get enough, we don't feel very good or alert. That is because sleep restores your energy. Sleep helps you deal with stress and recovering from illness or exercise. Without it, you'd be in big trouble!

Sleep is actually composed of REM and non-REM sleep that occurs in cycles. Dreams are usually found in the REM period.

During sleep your bod will repair tissue, build bone and muscle, and work on your immune system. Without sleep you are unable to recover from everyday activities. Lack of sleep will impair your brain processes, can cause depression, and hurt your immune response. People differ on how much sleep they need but most adults function best on 7 to 8 hours. Any questions about your own personal needs should be discussed with your physician.

Sleep Loss

Monday May 08, 2006

Can't get a good night of sleep? Your not the only one. But before we get into medications lets talk about some things you can try. Some other resources you might want to check out are WebMD and the National Sleep Foundation where you will find other and some of the same suggestions. Of course as always, this is not a substitute for professional advice from your doctor. On to the tips.

  1. Maintain a regular wake and sleep schedule. It's all about getting a rhythm, circadian if you will.
  2. Create an environment that is comfortable and conducive to you falling asleep. Quiet, cool, and free of interruptions will help.
  3. Avoid doing stressful activities right up until bedtime. When your mind is going on about bills, work, or any other major distraction, it's going to be hard to fall asleep.
  4. Avoid eating at least 2 hours before going to bed. Eating too close to bedtime may cause you discomfort when trying to sleep.
  5. Exercise regularly and try to finish a couple of hours before going to bed. Exercise brings on heightened alertness and a rise in temperature. A lower body temperature is associated with falling asleep.
  6. Avoid nicotine and caffeine. Both are stimulants and can interfere with sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation caffeine remains in the body 3 to 5 hours but can affect some people up to 12 hours after taken. Nicotine causes withdrawal symptoms which can cause awakenings, nightmares, and sweats.
  7. Consuming alcohol near bedtime can cause similar withdrawal symptoms as nicotine. Although a known relaxant and sedative and may even help you fall asleep, alcohol will disrupt regular sleep.
  8. Keep your bedroom activity limited to sleeping and sex. Avoid anything that causes you anxiety or tension.
  9. A routine that helps you prepare for and relax before bedtime will help you get a good nights rest.
  10. Use common sense! You know what works best for you.
