A couple of calories here and there all add up

Losing weight anywhere, anytime - 05/21/2007

In one of the recent news updates we came across an article declaring that the combination of a treadmill and office equipment would produce not only more healthy workers, but with no loss to productivity. The articles can easily be found on Google Health news, but before you snicker or just write it off as crazy, lets think about this for a moment. How different is it sitting at a desk as opposed to lying on the couch? Is this really as crazy as it sounds? Are we really that sedentary at work? Obviously this does not apply to all people. I'm going to guess that those police officers on bikes get a lot more exercise than say the programmer who doesn't move from their desk unless it's to the snack machine.

I realize that sometimes I take a bit to get to the point, but what I think most people do not realize is that weight loss is so very additive because it comes down to simple math. If you cheat on the weekend and have a couple of twinkies, that puts you that farther behind. If you decide to walk one mile instead of three because you are tired, that's just future work you are building up. Do most people tend to get more productive and mentally strong with the passage of time? I dare say no, it's called procrastination. Those calories burn at a certain rate and they come from somewhere. Sometimes it seems that we treat weight loss as such a mystery, but I'm really of the opinion that you and your doctor can really nail it down if you choose to do so.

So maybe there's no way a treadmill and your desktop are going to go together. Nor would your boss even approve such thing. I bet though, that sometimes you could take the stairs instead of the elevators. You could keep your work space clear of unhealthy snacks. Instead of driving to lunch, walk a short way. If eating out gets you, pack a lunch and save some money at the same time! Do you really need the closest parking spot everywhere you go? The TV is not going anywhere, go do something fun. The idea here is that the little things add (or subtract in this case) just like they do when you cheat here and there. If it's just as easy for things to add up against you, then the reverse is probably true. So do those little things, impress your doctor, your friends and yourself.
