Hello Acomplia!

Checking out the new Phentermine killer?- 05/29/2007

ACOMPLIA or rimonabant 20 mg/day has been approved for marketing in all 25 European Union member states. Developed by sanofi-adventis, this medication in conjunction with diet and exercise is for treatment of obese or overweight persons. 6,600 patients worldwide participated in the testing of this drug, 4,400 subjects were studied for over two years. Results showed that one tablet taken every day resulted in decreases in weight and waist size. Interestingly the EC (European Comission) label states that about 50% of the observed improvements in HbA1c, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides were beyond those expected in normal weight loss.

Acomplia can improve several cardiometabolic risk factors in obese and overweight persons. Patients with a large waist, diabetes, or dyslipidemia are the most likely candidates to benefit from this medication. Development of type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease is linked to cardiometabolic risk factors that can be modified by the patient. Some of these risk factors include hypertension, hyperglycaemia, high LDL cholesterol. Symptoms of abdominal obesity such as high triglyceride levels, low HDL cholesterol, and insulin resistance are also considered risk factors.

In controlled studies adverse reactions for patients taking ACOMPLIA was 15.7% with the most common side effects being nausea, altered moods with depression disorders, anxiety, and dizziness. Patients with hepatic or renal problems or patients with serious psychiatric illnesses should not take Acomplia.

Acomplia selectively blocks CB1 receptors in the brain and other organs that participate in glucose and fat metabolism. This in essence reduces the appetite for food.
